Now that winter is drawing in, and the nights are colder and darker, we all begin to rely on our central heating just that little bit more, but of course, this leads to higher gas bills. Here at K and M Maintenance we know how expensive gas bills can be, and that is why we have produced this guide, to help you save money on your gas bills.

Insulation

Amazingly, up to 25% of the heat your boiler produces can be lost through the roof of your home, with a further 35% disappearing through the walls. This is a huge loss of heat and money. Insulating your loft and cavity walls can prevent this heat loss, helping you to get the most out of your boiler, while also saving you money in monthly gas bills. You should notice a difference almost immediately once your home has been insulated, and you’ll be able to turn the boiler settings down.

Boiler upgrade

Energy ratings on boilers don’t just serve to save the environment, but can also save you money. An A rated condensing boiler can save you up to £300 a year, as well as help to warm your home and provide hot water, a lot more efficiently than older model.

Keep draughts out

Radiators, and the central heating system in general, will have to work harder to heat your home if there are draughts caused by gaps under doors and around window frames. This means you will be setting your boiler on higher settings, and using more gas to heat your home, than may be necessary. Instead, try purchasing rubber or foam seals that fit around doors and window frames.

Water saving showerhead

Showers are often thought to be more energy efficient that baths, but actually some power showers, pressure showers and jet showers can use more water than a bath. Of course, this can also depend on the time you take, but installing a water saving shower head can actually mean that you save money on your gas bills, with very little effort.

In summary

There are some great ways to save money on your gas bills, from expensive fittings such as insulation and new boilers, to cheap and easy fixes such as preventing draughts and swapping your showerhead.
