Gas bills can be expensive and for some households putting the heating on is a big decision. Using the central heating, hot water, gas fires, and gas cookers all adds up to what can be a mammoth bill at the end of the month or quarter. However, we at K&M Maintenance have put together this handy guide to help you save money this winter.

Energy supplier

Make sure you are getting the best deal from your energy supplier. If you haven’t switched supplier in the last three years, the chances are you could stand to make up to £400 in savings. Also, checking you are on the best tariff for your personal circumstances can also save you money.

Turn down the thermostat

According to the Energy Saving Trust, turning down the thermostat by just 1 degree can save you £85-£90 a year. If you were waiting for an incentive to wear a jumper rather than turn the thermostat up, that must be it!

Turn down the radiators

Turning down the radiators in rooms you don’t often use is a great way to save money. If you don’t really use the guest room, why heat it? With less radiators to heat, the boiler will consume less energy and you can save money.

Stop draughts

Draughts allow the heat you are building within your home to escape, meaning that it takes more boiler usage to heat your home. Preventing draughts from around windows, doors and fireplaces can help you save up to £50 a year.

Appliances

The appliances you choose can have a dramatic effect on your gas bills. An energy efficient boiler, preferably graded A, can save you nearly £350 a year. Having said that, purchasing and fitting a new boiler can cost up to £2,500, so if you are watching your coins, only purchase a new one if your old one must be replaced.
