Here at K and M Maintenance, we realise how irritating a tripped fuse can be. Causing all of your appliances to switch off simultaneously, as well as your lights, a tripped fuse can be problematic. A computer crashing in the middle of an important update, or your washing machine switching off mid spin is not going to be helpful. And for some, being plunged into darkness can be frightening and confusing. So how can you fix a tripped fuse? And in which circumstances would you need a professional? We are Preston’s leading electrical company, and this is our guide to fixing a domestic tripped fuse.
Safety first
If your electricity is acting up, you should always be safety conscious. Electrical damage, electrocution and electrical fires can all claim lives. Don’t become a statistic. Instead, switch off and unplug all effected appliances before beginning to examine them. Residual electrical charge can still be dangerous.
Fuse box
The first step is to locate your homes fuse box. Try a cupboard alongside or close to the electric meter if you aren’t sure where to begin looking.
Once you have found it, you need to decide if this fuse box is modern or traditional. So what is the difference?
A modern fuse box responds to a faulty appliance by breaking the electrical circuit throughout your home and switching off all of the lights and sockets. This is to keep your home protected and is a good safety mechanism. As a result, when you look at the fuse box you will see rows of switches. One of these switches will be off, and all you need to do is switch is back on.
However, a traditional fuse box is a lot more complicated and for this, you would need an electrician to take a look. This is because a traditional fuse box is probably outside the realms of current safety standards and attempting to fix it yourself could be lethal.
What if the electricity trips again?
If you have a modern fuse box and have managed to turn the power back on, beware that the same faulty appliance may trigger it again. As a result, it is important to find the root cause of the problem.
To do this you need to use trial and error. Switch on the power and then switch on each of the sockets until the power trips again. The last socket you switched on is the culprit. You should unplug the appliances and contact the professionals to take a look.
In summary
Fixing a domestic tripped fuse is not as difficult as it may sound. However, if you cannot locate the fault and the electrics continue to trip, you will need to contact a professional and qualified electrician. Why not get in touch with us at K and M Maintenance and find out more?
