Way back in the September of 2015, the Eu’s commitment to reducing carbon emissions saw the introduction of the ErP rating system. This system is applied to most white goods and some electrical items, as well as boilers, and has had a direct impact on both manufacturers and installers. Utilising a labelling system to make the most energy efficient boilers visibly clear to potential consumers and customers, the ErP rating labels grade the appliance from A+++ to G.
What does this mean for you?
Well, with the ErP labelling system, choosing a new boiler will be easier. Of course, the most energy efficient boilers rated A+++ will likely be the most expensive, so if you are boiler shopping on a budget, you may want to aim for around a B rating to get a boiler that may not be as effective, but won’t be out of your price range.
Also, boilers that are non-condensing, or with poor condensing technology, are likely not to be sold in the leading chain retailers, or by any respectable retailer for that matter. This is because, by law, the manufacturers of boilers now have to ensure that their boiler can meet energy performance requirements, so boilers with poor energy usage, are no longer manufactured at all. As the consumer, this is a good deal for you, as it means you are far less likely to be paying money for a poor quality product, that could cost you even more in the long run.
Furthermore, the ErP rating system means that your bills are likely to be reduced as you will be using less gas. This stems from two directions: the manufacturing of better quality and more efficient boilers, and the clear labelling of boilers in terms of efficiency. A more efficient boiler will be able to heat your home and provide hot water by using less gas than a less efficient boiler, which means that your gas bills could be reduced by up to £350 a year.
