Carbon monoxide alarm systems are essential. Exposure to carbon monoxide causes a range of health problems and leads ultimately to loss of life. Consequently, knowing how to act when the alarm sounds, could save your life. Here at K and M Maintenance we are gas specialists. As a result, we have produced this guide to help you act quickly when the carbon monoxide alarm sounds.

Fresh air

The first step you should take is to open all of the windows and doors you can safely access. This will allow fresh air to circulate in your home and reduce the negative effects of carbon monoxide.

In addition, it will allow the carbon monoxide to leave your home and prevent it from building up. Opening your property to fresh air needs to be done quickly.

Switch off

Carbon monoxide is a gas. As a result, all appliances that use an open flame need to be turned off. This includes gas ovens, boilers, and gas fires. If these appliances are left on, it can cause a fire, so it makes sense to reduce the risk.

In addition, your lights need to be left off. Even if the alarm wakes you in the middle of the night, don’t switch the light on! Even more importantly, please don’t light a match or a cigarette.

Once you have switched off the appliances, you need to exit the building.

Medical advice

If you feel unwell, you should seek medical advice. Symptoms of carbon monoxide poisoning include headaches, nausea, and dizziness. It’s better to contact a medical professional sooner rather than later.
