Although the boiler is often the culprit of many faults and problems that homeowners face, it does often get the blame when it’s actually not faulty. At K and M Maintenance our gas engineers are ready to respond to any problem or issue you may have with your boiler, but sometimes it isn’t your boiler with the problem, even when all clues point in that direction. For example, when you have a problem with your central heating, the first point of call is the boiler, but more often than not, the problem actually is stemming from another part of your central heating system.
Radiators
As part of your central heating maintenance you should bleed your radiators at the start of every winter. Not bleeding your radiators can lead to your home having no heating and you and your family being unnecessarily cold. If you have hot water and no heating, bleeding the radiators more often than not will solve your heating issue. If you currently have hot water but no heating, check to see if any of your radiators are mildly warm. If even one radiator is slightly warm, the problem is not your boiler.
Needing to bleed your radiators is not the only issue your radiators can have. Occasionally, your radiators may feel warm at the top and sides, but otherwise be cold. In this eventuality, your radiator has become full of sludge, through which the hot water can no longer navigate. To solve this issue, your radiators will need cleaning.
Power cuts
If there is a power cut, your boiler settings will be reset to factory settings and you may lose any programmed times and temperatures you had set. You should check the settings that your boiler is displaying and reset them manually to what you want, even if they are still displaying your original program.
Faulty thermostat
If your thermostat is set on a high temperature but you still have no warm radiators, your problem could be with the thermostat itself, or the communication between this and the boiler may have broken down.
Central heating pump
Your central heating pump is responsible for pumping water from the boiler around the radiators and back to the boiler. This needs to be plugged into the mains to work and if this is broken you may not be able to heat your radiators.
In Summary
There are many parts to a central heating system and although the boiler is at the head, it is not always a boiler fault when a problem occurs. Don’t hesitate to contact us at K and M Maintenance for free professional advice or to arrange a booking.
